Lead nurturing strategy

Lead nurturing strategy

A lead nurturing strategy is the plan for what you send a lead who is not ready to buy, and when. A lead scoring model assigns the number. A marketing qualified lead (MQL) is the line on it; nurturing is everything below that line.

Most people who fill in a form are not buying this quarter. Your strategy decides how often they hear from you, on which channel, and what pulls them out of the sequence early.

It sits downstream of demand generation and lead generation: those two create the contact, nurturing keeps it warm until the threshold is crossed.

Key takeaways

  • Nurturing owns the sequence; scoring owns the maths, and the threshold belongs to the MQL definition.
  • Every sequence needs an exit rule — not just a start date.
  • Email law sets the floor: a postal address, an advertisement label, and a working opt out.
  • Measure the programme on pipeline created later, not on open rates this week.

How it works

A nurture programme runs on three parts: a segment that says who is in it, a sequence of messages at set intervals, and an exit rule. The exit fires when the lead crosses the score threshold, asks for sales, or unsubscribes.

Segmentation comes first. One generic sequence sent to every form fill is why most programmes stall: a procurement lead and an end user want different things in a different order.

StageWhat it doesTypical cadence
WelcomeConfirms the signup, sets expectationsWithin 24 hours
EducationAnswers the problem, not the productWeekly for a month
ConsiderationComparison content, pricing logic, proofEvery 10 days
Re-engagementOne last offer before dormancyMonthly, then stop

Most of this runs on email marketing, because email is the only channel where you own the list. An email auto-responder handles the timing, firing each message a set number of days after the last action.

Cadence is a judgement call with a cost on both sides. Send too often and you burn the list. Send too rarely and the lead forgets who you are before the budget cycle comes round.

A workable default for business purchases is one message a week for the first month, then one a fortnight. Pull back faster if the unsubscribe rate on any single message climbs above the programme average.

Map each step to a stage in the sales funnel, or you will send comparison content to people who are still working out what their problem is.

The sequence has legal floors, not just editorial ones.

Under the CAN-SPAM Act, a marketing email must carry a valid physical postal address and identify itself as an advertisement. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also requires that an opt-out request be honoured within 10 business days.

That clock is the reason a nurture sequence needs a suppression list wired into the sending tool — not a spreadsheet someone updates on Fridays.

The handoff rule belongs to the MQL definition, not to the nurture plan. Your job ends at the threshold. What sales does next is a separate agreement with its own response time.

Examples

Three shapes cover most programmes: a long education track for slow purchases, a short trigger sequence tied to one action, and a re-engagement push aimed at leads that went quiet. Each answers a different reason for the delay.

An enterprise software vendor with a nine month buying cycle runs a twelve message education track. Nothing in the first six messages mentions the product, because the goal is to stay present while a buying committee forms.

A professional services firm uses a trigger sequence instead. Downloading the pricing page fires three messages in nine days and nothing else, because that single action already signals a near term decision.

A UK retailer sends a three message cart sequence over five days.

The Information Commissioner’s Office says the United Kingdom’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) often require specific consent for unsolicited direct marketing, and are generally stricter for individuals than companies.

A subscription brand running re-engagement sends two messages to contacts that have opened nothing in six months, then removes them. Dead addresses cost money and damage sending reputation.

Outsourced teams run a lot of this work. A Manila nurture desk can own list hygiene, send scheduling and reply triage while the in-house marketer keeps the message. The split works because the sequence is a routine — once the copy exists.

Related terms

  • Email marketing: the channel most sequences run on; nurturing is one use of it, not the whole of it.
  • Email marketing specialist: the role that builds and maintains the sequences and the sending platform behind them.
  • Lead generation: creates the contact record; nurturing only starts once that record exists.
  • Sales funnel: the stage model a sequence maps onto, so the right content reaches the right step.
  • Customer lifetime value: what a nurtured lead is eventually worth, and the ceiling on what the sequence should cost.

FAQ

How is lead nurturing different from lead scoring?

Scoring is the maths that turns behaviour and fit into a number. Nurturing is what you send the leads whose number is still too low to pass to sales.

When should a lead leave the nurture sequence?

When it crosses the agreed score threshold, asks to speak to sales, or opts out. Write all three exits before you write the first email, because a sequence with no exit keeps mailing people who already bought.

How long should a nurture sequence run?

Match it to the buying cycle — a three month purchase needs weeks of contact, a nine month committee decision needs quarters of it. Running longer than the cycle just raises your unsubscribe rate.

Does nurturing only mean email?

No. Email carries most of it because you own the list and the cost per message is close to zero, but retargeting, direct mail and a scheduled check-in call all count as nurture contacts.

What should a nurture programme be measured on?

Pipeline created from nurtured contacts, counted three to six months after the sequence ends. Open rates tell you the subject line worked, not that the sequence changed anybody’s mind.
