About Upwork: Review and comparison

Upwork is a marketplace for businesses and freelancers to connect. This Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) provider, unlike many BPO companies, serves as a hub for workers to bid on and apply for jobs posted by businesses.

Upwork provides a place for freelancers to advertise themselves to potential employers while letting businesses filter and vet a large pool of potential employees. Odysseas Tsatalos rebranded the company in 2015 after the merger of Elance, a BPO company since 1998, and oDesk, another freelance bidding site from 2003.

Between 500 and 1,000 employees work at Upwork to manage the interaction between freelancers and hirers, including vetting and finding freelancers to match candidates with the right jobs. On LinkedIn, almost 100,000 people list this company as a site they work through as freelancers.

Workers using the site earned a collective $2.3 billion in 2020 from outsourced jobs across several business sectors like administrative, design, computer engineering, and marketing.

Upwork Outsourcing

Unlike a staffing agency, Upwork doesn’t hire people to outsource to other companies. Instead, freelancers bid and apply for jobs that companies post. Freelancers can also post pre-defined projects. Companies pay set prices for those projects, like a website design project or a programming task.

This BPO provider offers companies their Talent Scout service. This service provides companies with a shortlist of the best candidates from the talent pool of freelancers.

Upwork’s BPO services and pricings

Upwork features on-site and remote jobs as well as skilled talent in hundreds of specific job classifications in the following general categories:

  • Development and IT
  • Design and Creative
  • Sales and Marketing
  • Writing and Translation
  • Admin and Customer Support
  • Finance and Accounting
  • Engineering and Architecture
  • HR and Training
  • Legal

Upwork’s pricing

The cost depends on the plan a business chooses. Plans range from 3% of the fee paid to a freelancer to a monthly subscription that gives them access to all of Upwork’s vetting tools.

How Upwork outshines its competition

This firm serves as a cross between a freelance job board and bidding site and a staffing solution for businesses. They offer both standard job posting and bidding. They also provide white-glove treatment for companies that hire frequently and pay for a monthly subscription.

Key executives

Hayden Brown (President and CEO)

Oxford and Princeton-educated Hayden Brown started at Elance-oDesk in 2011 as the VP and Director of Product and became the CEO in January 2020. She previously worked for LivePerson and Microsoft.

Jeff McCombs (Chief Financial Officer)

Jeff McCombs has over a decade of experience as the Chief Financial Officer at companies like OpenTable and Flipboard. McCombs is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, and previously worked at Facebook and Yahoo!
