IAOP Membership

Definition

IAOP Membership

IAOP membership means joining the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals, the main trade body for buyers, providers and advisers. It is a network, and not a mark of quality, though IAOP also runs a certification aimed at individual practitioners.

The association is unusual in serving all three sides of the market. Most industry bodies represent either buyers or suppliers — this one puts them in the same room, which is rather the point.

Membership itself sits at the organisation, and certification sits with the individual. Conflating the two is the most common error in reading a supplier’s credentials slide.

The value depends heavily on how much sourcing you actually do. For a team running several large deals a year the network pays for itself — for an occasional buyer it rarely does.

Key takeaways

  • The association serves outsourcing buyers, providers and advisers together.
  • Membership is organisational; the professional certification is individual.
  • Its best-known outputs are an annual provider list and a global summit.
  • Value tracks sourcing volume, so occasional buyers gain little.

How it works

Organisations join and gain access to research, working groups, events and the association’s professional development programme. Individuals separately pursue certification, which requires demonstrated experience rather than membership alone.

The association’s named programmes are the visible part. It runs the Certified Outsourcing Professionals designation, The Global Outsourcing 100 and The Outsourcing World Summit, alongside an academy and a set of topic-based centres of excellence.

Its self-description is about exchange rather than accreditation. The body calls itself a place where outsourcing and business services professionals turn insight into action, through collaboration and shared expertise.

What you getWho it servesWhat it is not
Research and working groupsSourcing teams building internal practiceAn audit of any member’s capability
Certification programmeIndividual practitionersA company-level quality mark
The Global Outsourcing 100Providers seeking visibilityAn independent capability ranking
Summit and eventsAll three sides of the marketA substitute for provider due diligence
Centres of excellenceSpecialists in named domainsSector regulation of any kind

The market context is large enough to sustain a profession. Services represent roughly half of world trade when measured in value-added terms, according to World Trade Organization figures.

Sourcing decisions inside that flow are what the association exists to professionalise — and what its research, events and certification are built around.

The honest caveat concerns the provider list. Inclusion depends on applying and on submitting information, which means it reflects participation as much as merit, and a strong provider that never applies simply will not appear.

Examples

Membership pays off in recognisably different ways depending on which side of the market you sit. These are things that happen, rather than things that appear on a capability slide.

A corporate sourcing team joins to build internal capability, sending three managers through certification and using the working groups to benchmark its governance model.

A mid-sized provider joins mainly for visibility, applying to the annual list and exhibiting at the summit, treating both as marketing rather than as accreditation.

An independent adviser holds individual certification without any organisational membership, which is a common and perfectly legitimate combination.

A buyer sees a provider list placement in a bid and asks how the list is compiled, learning that inclusion follows a submission rather than an independent assessment.

Related terms

Professional bodies, advisers and governance disciplines are easily confused, and the entries below hold them apart. The terms below carry one meaning apiece, and the boundary is stated rather than implied.

FAQ

Who can join?

Buyers, providers and advisers all can. The association deliberately serves all three sides rather than representing one against the others.

Is membership the same as certification?

No. Membership belongs to an organisation, while the Certified Outsourcing Professional designation belongs to an individual and requires demonstrated experience.

Does membership certify service quality?

No. It provides access to research, events and networks. Delivery quality is evidenced by references, audits and your own assessment.

What is The Global Outsourcing 100?

An annual list of providers compiled by the association. Inclusion follows an application and submission, so it reflects participation alongside capability.

Is it worth joining as a buyer?

It depends on volume. Teams running several significant sourcing decisions a year get most value; occasional buyers generally do not.

Can individuals join without their employer?

Individuals can pursue the professional certification independently, which is common among consultants and contract sourcing specialists.
