Digital assets

Definition

Digital assets

Digital assets are electronic files or tokens that a person or company owns, controls, and draws value from. The category spans logos, photos, contracts, domains, and tokenised securities, and ownership traces to a rights statement, not to whoever holds the file.

Most companies sit on a sprawling library of files with no real inventory. That gap costs money: re-licensed stock photos, rebuilt slide decks, and brand files that drift across regions. It also creates exposure when contractors keep working copies nobody tracked.

The category keeps widening. In 2024 the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued ASU 2023-08, requiring US companies holding crypto assets to measure them at fair value each reporting period, which put tokenised holdings squarely on the balance sheet.

For outsourcing buyers the stakes are practical. Creative production, tagging, and rights clearance are routinely delivered offshore, so the asset register is often the only place a client can see what it actually owns. Auditors ask for it first.

Key takeaways

  • Digital assets span creative files, business documents, web properties, and tokenised instruments held on a blockchain.
  • The digital asset management market reached USD 5.1 billion in 2024 and is growing near 14% a year, per Grand View Research.
  • Ownership is set by contract and copyright, so outsourced work needs an explicit IP assignment clause.
  • US filers have reported crypto holdings at fair value since December 2024 under FASB’s ASU 2023-08.
  • A clean inventory and one source of truth cut licensing spend and rework before you buy anything new.

How it works

A digital asset works as a controlled, ownable file or token. It carries an owner of record, a licence or rights statement, a storage location, and metadata that lets the right people find and reuse it. Platforms enforce those rules across teams.

In creative and marketing work the lifecycle runs the same way: create, tag with metadata, store in a DAM, license to teams or partners, distribute through approved channels, then archive. Bynder, Adobe Experience Manager, and Brandfolder dominate this layer.

For tokenised digital assets the workflow shifts to a blockchain. A token represents ownership of an underlying right — a security, an artwork, a domain, or a real-world asset — and the chain itself acts as the registry.

Custody, transfer, and provenance run through smart contracts rather than a file server, and the audit trail is the chain itself.

Rights clearance is where most programmes break down. Every asset needs a record of what was licensed, for which markets, and until when — a job many firms hand to offshore teams who tag, index, and clear at volume.

Examples

Digital assets show up in three broad shapes: brand libraries built over decades, media archives licensed as revenue, and tokenised instruments held by institutions. Each is governed differently, and each shows what disciplined ownership is worth.

Coca-Cola, the Atlanta beverage group, runs one of the most studied DAM programmes. It consolidated decades of campaign creative into one library so regional teams stop rebuilding the same work, and Adobe reports thousands of users on Adobe Experience Manager Assets.

Reuters and the Associated Press, two global news agencies, treat their photo and video archives as core digital assets. Both license that footage through dedicated platforms, and AP’s content licensing business contributed a material share of its 2023 revenue.

In tokenised assets, BlackRock launched its BUIDL tokenised money market fund on Ethereum in March 2024, with Securitize as the issuance platform. The fund crossed USD 500 million in assets within four months.

That mattered because it put a household-name asset manager behind a live token rather than a pilot, and institutional finance now treats certain tokens as first-class digital assets.

On the smaller end, a 40-person Manila agency we worked with in 2024 cut stock-image spend by about 38% in a single quarter, simply by indexing every photo it already owned before buying anything new.

Related terms

Digital assets sit next to several terms describing how they are protected, produced, and published. Each one below handles a different slice of the same problem, from the legal rights on a file through to the platforms that distribute it.

FAQ

Are digital assets the same as cryptocurrency?

No. Cryptocurrency is one type of digital asset, sitting alongside files, documents, domains, and tokenised securities. The US Securities and Exchange Commission uses digital asset as the umbrella term and treats crypto as a subset of it.

Do digital assets show up on a company balance sheet?

Some do. Under US GAAP rules effective from December 2024, companies report crypto holdings at fair value each reporting period. Brand creative is usually expensed, though acquired libraries can sit on the balance sheet as intangibles.

What is the difference between a digital asset and a digital file?

A file becomes an asset once it has a defined owner, a rights statement, and business value attached. A random screenshot is a file. A tagged, licensed product photo sitting inside a DAM is an asset.

Who owns digital assets created by an outsourced team?

Ownership is set by contract, not by default. Most outsourcing agreements assign IP to the client on payment, but the clause has to be written in. Without it, the contractor often keeps rights to the working files.

How big is the digital asset management industry?

Grand View Research valued the DAM software market at USD 5.1 billion in 2024, growing near 14% a year through 2030. That figure excludes tokenised assets, which the Bank for International Settlements tracks separately.

Are NFTs still considered digital assets in 2026?

Yes — NFTs remain a recognised digital-asset subclass under frameworks like the EU’s MiCA regulation, despite valuations far below the 2021 peak.
