South African Success – 1,200 Staff in 5 Years with Sean Effune of Afrishore BPO

Sean Effune of Afrishore BPO on The Outsource Accelerator Podcast, episode 605

In five years, Sean Effune has built Afrishore BPO from a South African business with no international clients into a 1,200-person operation serving the US and UK. As president and founder, he joined the Outsource Accelerator Podcast to explain how he did it and where he is taking it next.

The conversation spans Afrishore’s rapid rise, what South Africa offers the outsourcing world, and a grounded view of AI.

Inside Afrishore BPO

Afrishore is deliberately hands-on, and Sean sets out its scale and ambition in a sentence.

“Afrishore is a bespoke owner-operated BPO operational center out of Johannesburg. We’re about, at the moment, 1,200 people in the organization, and really been going about five years on the international side… We’re pushing to bring 10,000 jobs to Afrishore in South Africa.”

US relocation

Perhaps the biggest unlock was personal. Sean relocated to the US roughly five years ago, and he credits proximity to clients with much of the growth.

“What I find is the clients, they respond a little bit better when I’m sitting in the same time zone and talking and pressing the flesh and really unlocking what they want help with and a solution.”

The practical edge is simple availability.

“I’m at the end of a quick telephone call at five o’clock in the afternoon as opposed to 1:00 AM in South Africa, when you may not get through to the right person.”

The boutique advantage

Much of Afrishore’s win rate, Sean says, comes from clients who felt overlooked elsewhere.

“Some of our success has been from clients saying, ‘Well, you know, we were with a big BPO, and we just didn’t feel loved’… It doesn’t matter how big we get, we still wanna offer that in-person offering.”

That closeness is also what lets Afrishore become a genuine partner rather than a staffing vendor.

“We’re just seeing one touch point. There’s 20 other touch points that we do not see, and if we can understand that… we can offer them something meaningful, not just the people.”

Focused on South Africa

While competitors spread across regions, Sean is intent on depth in one market.

“We have a mission to get to 10,000 seats in South Africa. I wanna focus on South Africa because… the talent pool in our local environment and a bit of focus can really get to a point, in my opinion, to be about 10,000.”

He is equally clear that the old model is finished.

“Adopting the way that the market is changing with AI and technology, and being a much more solution-orientated offering as opposed to just an hourly resource. Those days are gone.”

What South Africa offers

Asked to make the case for the country, Sean is concise.

“The benefits of South Africa in its simplest form are, there’s obviously a more neutral accent on voice type work. There is unfortunately high unemployment, so that brings about opportunity of an abundance of skilled and semi-skilled work.”

He frames that as a stage-of-growth advantage over more established hubs, where clients are largely neutral on location anyway, with redundancy their main caveat.

“When markets reach saturation points, you have to pivot. I think South Africa is far from a saturated point. I think there is a ton of talent.”

Afrishore has even built capability most would not expect from the region.

“We actually had an office in Belize… the complexities of the management and the controls led us to consider, can we service this market that requires bilingual Spanish out of South Africa?

And you’d be surprised, we actually can. We have over 100 bilingual Spanish agents, team leaders working in the group.”

More than jobs

For Sean, the work carries a social return that clearly motivates him.

“It always brings me joy when you hear the stories of agent to supervisor to QA to manager to operations exec, and they are homegrown. Many people, especially in South Africa, have not had the same opportunities as the rest of the world has.”

A bullish read on AI

Sean sees AI changing the work rather than ending it.

“Technology will shift the level of work that is being outsourced. Clearly gone are the days of basic work being outsourced… I think the net-net is an opportunity for growth.”

He is candid that the near-term reality is messier than the hype suggests.

“We’ve also seen clients reverse their decision because, from an economic point, it actually hasn’t shown that economic value just yet.”

He expects fewer entry-level roles, but is unworried about demand.

“There will be obviously much less frontline tier one type jobs in the next 10 years. That’s clear, but that doesn’t mean that there will not be other opportunities… I’m still very bullish of the overall growth in the sector.”

For Sean, South Africa’s outsourcing story is only getting started, and the path to 10,000 jobs runs through close client relationships, local talent, and a model built on solutions rather than seats.
