Nigeria Outsourcing

Definition

Nigeria Outsourcing

Nigeria outsourcing is the use of Nigerian providers and technology teams by companies abroad. The country has Africa’s largest population and biggest ICT market, but infrastructure gaps have kept most of its capacity serving domestic rather than export demand.

Nigeria is an English-speaking market of enormous scale with a young and fast-growing workforce — its technology sector is genuinely the continent’s largest by value.

The gap between potential and export delivery is the story here — power and connectivity constraints, rather than talent or language, are what have limited Nigeria’s share of international outsourcing.

Key takeaways

  • Nigeria has Africa’s largest population and contributes 82 percent of the continent’s ICT value.
  • ICT reached nearly 20 percent of national output in the second quarter of 2024.
  • Available generation is about 4,500 MW against estimated demand of 40,000 MW.
  • Around 3.5 million people enter the labour force each year.

How it works

A Nigerian engagement usually means a software development or technology services team in Lagos or Abuja working for an international client, often through a firm with a foreign parent or a foreign-registered entity.

The scale of the sector is not in doubt. The US International Trade Administration reports ICT at nearly 20 percent of GDP in the second quarter of 2024, with Nigeria contributing 82 percent of Africa’s ICT value.

Estimated power demand40,000 MWThe gap is structural, not temporary

Power is the constraint that decides site viability. Installed capacity is 12,910 MW across 23 grid-connected plants, only around 4,500 MW is actually available, and electricity access sits at roughly 45 percent of the population.

Labour supply is the opposite picture. The World Bank records about 3.5 million people entering the Nigerian labour force each year, with growth of 4 percent in 2025 driven largely by services including ICT.

Currency movement cuts both ways. The naira fell from around N400 to the dollar to about N1,700 by November 2024, which made Nigerian rates very cheap in dollars while making imported equipment expensive.

Examples

Nigerian engagements are concentrated in technology rather than voice services, and the three below reflect what international buyers actually contract rather than the domestic work that makes up most of the sector.

  • Software engineering teams. Firms run software development outsourcing with Lagos-based teams, usually contracted through an entity registered abroad.
  • Fintech product development. International payment companies build engineering capacity in Nigeria, drawing on a domestic sector that produced several large fintech firms.
  • Impact-focused digital work. Buyers use impact sourcing programmes training young Nigerians for entry-level digital roles at scale.

The domestic orientation is the point most buyers miss — Nigeria’s technology sector is enormous and largely serves Nigerian customers, so export-ready providers are a smaller subset than headline figures suggest.

Nigeria is generally compared with the established Asian destinations on cost and English capability and with other African markets on readiness, so the terms below cover those comparisons and the models used.

FAQ

Why is Nigeria not a bigger outsourcing destination?

Infrastructure rather than talent. Available power generation is about 4,500 MW against estimated demand of 40,000 MW, so every site needs self-generation and reliability guarantees are harder.

How large is Nigeria’s technology sector?

The largest in Africa. ICT reached nearly 20 percent of GDP in the second quarter of 2024, and the country contributes 82 percent of the continent’s ICT value.

Is English an advantage?

Yes, English is the official language and the medium of instruction, so language is not a barrier for British or American buyers.

What does the labour supply look like?

Around 3.5 million people enter the labour force every year, giving one of the largest and youngest candidate pools anywhere.

Has currency weakness made Nigeria cheap?

In dollar terms, yes. The naira fell from about N400 to roughly N1,700 to the dollar by November 2024, though this raises the cost of imported equipment.

What work suits Nigeria best?

Software engineering and fintech product development, rather than high-volume voice services.
