Musk’s forecast
Artificial intelligence (AI) will change how the world works, but it won’t drastically alter human behavior.
Elon Musk predicts that rapid advances in AI would make work optional within the next 10 to 20 years. The Tesla CEO says that at some point, people will view work like playing a sport, a video game, or some leisure activity.
Musk’s bombastic statement builds on the widely held belief that AI and related technologies would streamline workflows, create rich economies, and make the world a better place. For some people, this means having more time to do what they truly want, without being bound to an office chair in front of a computer at least eight hours a day.
It’s quite strange that such a statement would come from the tech scion, a notorious workaholic who reportedly works for 80 to 120 hours a week. People like Musk view work not just as a money-making enterprise but as something that fulfills their daily lives.
Purpose of work
AI will accelerate processes, automate low-value, repetitive tasks, and revolutionize many aspects of work. It will displace some occupations but create new employment opportunities.
Musk’s prediction is promising, but it ignores the human urge to improve, whether through boosting their social and economic status or simply seeking a sense of fulfillment each day. Apart from financial security, work boosts an individual’s pride and self-esteem. Some people may harbor ill feelings toward work, but most take delight in being productive members of society.
Day jobs provide structure to individuals’ lives. It allows them to practice and continuously improve their skills, be it communication, leadership, collaboration, and adaptability. Most workers love the idea of moving up the corporate ladder and see how they have improved over the years.
It is also through day jobs that employees build meaningful relationships that last a lifetime. Some people may not be fully engaged at work but show up because of the wonderful people they’ve met.
A history lesson
Musk’s declaration that work would be optional because of AI ignores how technology and society have interacted over the years.
The Internet has wiped out traditional media such as newspapers and cable TV, but has led to the creation of new media on YouTube, TikTok, streaming platforms, and websites. Advertisers have tweaked their business plans to survive the change and cater to new developments. The Internet’s effect on those industries shows how advances in technology will not completely decimate industries and employment, but will merely transform them.
AI is still in its nascent stage, and it’s difficult to determine how it would affect industries. But if we are to trust history, humans will still find a way to be active members of society by continuously making a difference through work.
