I bootstrapped my last business to $20m revenues, off the back of outsourcing. Surprisingly, it was an accommodation business, managing apart-hotels, or ‘corporate housing,’ based in central London, UK. What could be more ‘local’ than a brick-and-mortar accommodation business?
Yet, we had 70% of our staff based in the Philippines.
The team in the Philippines would manage all online bookings, corporate sales, digital marketing, accounting and finance, web and digital, HR, most of the operations, and much of the strategic leadership. We just had a skeleton staff operating from London. The Philippine team, from Manila, would directly coordinate and schedule the cleaning and maintenance teams, and they would communicate directly with the guests if they ever needed assistance.
Offshoring is not just limited to basic admin roles, customer service and sales.
All-in, we had about 70 staff in Manila, and all-in cost us about $70,000 each month. That includes all the office facilities, senior management, employment costs, and of course the salaries for 70 people! Do the math, that’s a pretty good deal!
Compared to hiring those 70 people in London, I estimate that we were saving easily $70,000 per month – at least.
