Marketing qualified lead

Marketing qualified lead

A marketing qualified lead (MQL) is one definition: the point at which a lead is judged ready to pass to sales. It is a line, not a process. A lead scoring model computes the number, and nurturing handles everyone who sits under it.

The value is in the agreement, not the arithmetic. An MQL only means something when both teams have signed up to the same threshold and to what happens within hours of a lead crossing it.

Without that, marketing counts volume and sales counts closed business, and the two argue every quarter about whether the leads were any good.

Key takeaways

  • An MQL is a line and an agreement — not a stage of work or a scoring method.
  • The definition must fix the threshold, the fit floor, the owner and the response time.
  • A rejection route with reason codes is what stops the same bad lead being passed twice.
  • Review the threshold against closed business, not against how many MQLs it produces.

How it works

An MQL definition is a short document with five settings: the score threshold, the minimum fit, how recent the activity must be, who receives the lead, and how fast they must act. Everything else is implementation detail.

FieldWhat it fixesWorked example
Threshold scoreThe number that triggers the pass75 of 100
Fit floorMinimum company and role matchDecision maker, 200 plus staff
Recency windowHow fresh the activity must beAction in the last 14 days
Owner on receiptWho picks it up and how fastInside sales, one business day
Reject routeWhere a refused lead goes back toNurture, with a reason code

Sales capacity is the reason the line exists at all. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the May 2025 median wage at $104,920 for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives in technical and scientific products.

That occupation is also projected to show little or no change in employment between 2025 and 2035. Capacity is not getting cheaper or more plentiful, so the threshold is doing real rationing work.

An inside sales representative who gets twelve MQLs a day and can work four will pick by instinct. A threshold set too low does not add pipeline; it just moves the filtering to someone less equipped to do it.

Set the threshold where sales capacity sits, then raise or lower it as capacity changes. This is a negotiation between two teams — not a setting in the marketing tool.

The reject route matters more than the threshold — leads bounced back with no reason code get passed again next month, which is how a definition loses credibility in a single quarter.

Write the definition on one page and date it. An MQL definition that lives in three slide decks and a spreadsheet is really three definitions, and the arguments start the first time the numbers disagree.

Outbound follow-up on an MQL has rules attached. The Telemarketing Sales Rule, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission under 16 CFR 310, prohibits calls to a consumer who has asked not to be called again and limits when telemarketers may call.

A lead generation virtual assistant handling first contact needs those limits written into the call script, not left to judgement on the day.

Examples

Definitions vary by how long the purchase takes and how many people are involved. A short transactional purchase can qualify on one action; a long committee purchase needs several, from more than one person at the account.

A business software firm with a six month sales cycle qualifies a lead only when two people from the same company have each taken a scoring action within 30 days. One enthusiastic researcher is not a buying signal.

A logistics provider sets the bar lower because its purchase closes in three weeks. Any decision maker who requests pricing is an MQL, and the inside sales team calls within two hours.

A professional services firm reviews its threshold against average sales cycle length every quarter. When the cycle stretches, the firm raises the bar rather than flooding a slower pipeline with more names.

None of these definitions is portable. Copying a competitor’s threshold imports their capacity, their cycle length and their lead mix, none of which will match yours.

In all three, a sales enablement manager owns what the receiving rep is handed alongside the lead: the source, the actions taken, and the reason the threshold was met.

Related terms

  • Sales cycle: the full path from first contact to close; the MQL is one checkpoint inside it.
  • Average sales cycle length: the figure you re-tune the threshold against when deals speed up or slow down.
  • Inside sales representative: the role that usually receives an MQL and makes first contact.
  • Outbound sales: contact initiated by sales rather than earned by marketing; outbound leads rarely enter as MQLs.
  • Sales productivity ratio: what the threshold is really protecting, since every unready lead costs selling time.

FAQ

Is an MQL the same as a lead score?

No — the score is the input, the MQL is the line drawn on it. A scoring model can exist without an MQL definition, but an MQL definition is meaningless without something to measure against.

What is the difference between an MQL and an SQL?

A marketing qualified lead has met marketing’s threshold. A sales qualified lead has been accepted by sales after a conversation, which usually confirms budget, authority and timing.

Who should own the MQL definition?

Both teams jointly, with a scheduled review. Marketing maintains the mechanics in the tooling, and sales confirms that leads crossing the line are worth the time they take.

How often should the threshold change?

Quarterly is a reasonable default, or sooner if sales capacity changes sharply. A threshold that has not moved in two years is almost certainly wrong by now.

What happens to a lead sales rejects?

It returns to nurture with a reason code, and the reason codes are reviewed as a set. Codes clustering on one source or one campaign tell you where the definition or the targeting is failing.
