Colombia Outsourcing

Definition

Colombia Outsourcing

Colombia outsourcing is the use of Colombian providers and service teams by companies based abroad. The country has become Latin America’s most balanced nearshore option, combining real scale, genuine bilingual depth and a spread of cities rather than a single hub.

Most nearshore markets force a choice between scale and quality — Colombia is unusual in offering a workable amount of both.

It is also the only country in the region where a buyer can realistically compare four or five domestic cities against each other before committing.

Key takeaways

  • Colombia is Latin America’s fourth-largest economy and its most balanced nearshore market.
  • Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla and Cartagena are all genuine commercial centres.
  • The country hosts 12.8 percent of Latin America and the Caribbean’s digital firms, third behind Brazil and Mexico.
  • Labour informality of 56 percent is the main constraint on how fast a site can staff up.

How it works

Buyers engage Colombia through nearshore outsourcing contracts with local providers, or by opening their own sites. The US-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement, in force since May 2012, removed 90 percent of duties and underpins the commercial relationship.

Scale is the first argument. The US International Trade Administration records a population of roughly 52.7 million, the fourth-largest economy in Latin America, and bilateral trade with the United States reaching USD 54.8 billion in 2024.

Digital depth is the second. Colombia hosts 12.8 percent of Latin America and the Caribbean’s digital firms, ranking third after Brazil and Mexico, and internet use rose from 38 percent in 2014 to 63 percent in 2023.

FactorPositionBuyer implication
PopulationAbout 52.7 millionReal scale for multi-site programmes
Unemployment8.8% average, July 2025Available labour without extreme tightness
Informality56% of employmentFormal pool is smaller than headline numbers
Digital firms12.8% of the regional totalGenuine software as well as voice capability
Time zoneEastern Standard Time equivalentFull overlap with the US east coast

The informality figure deserves attention. Around 56 percent of employment sits outside the formal sector, so the recruitable pool is materially smaller than population alone suggests.

The World Bank puts national poverty at 35.5 percent in 2025 and growth at 2.6 percent.

That combination shows up when a site tries to hire its third hundred people — demand for formal jobs is high, while proven service-centre experience is not.

Examples

Colombian delivery spans voice, back office and software, which is a wider range than most regional peers support. The examples below reflect the work buyers genuinely place across the country’s main cities.

  • US-facing customer experience. Providers run customer experience outsourcing programmes for American retail, fintech and travel brands.
  • Nearshore software teams. Buyers use software development outsourcing from Medellín and Bogotá for product engineering.
  • Bilingual and Portuguese-adjacent support. Teams of multilingual agents cover Spanish, English and, less commonly, Portuguese queues.
  • Embedded engineering capacity. Staff augmentation arrangements place Colombian engineers directly into US product teams.

The common thread is that Colombia rarely wins on price alone — it wins when a buyer wants two or three different capabilities from one country.

FAQ

Which Colombian city should I choose?

It depends on the function. Bogotá suits finance and corporate work, Medellín suits software, and Cali and Barranquilla suit cost-sensitive voice operations.

How good is English in Colombia?

Good in the main cities and improving, though not universal. Providers concentrate their bilingual staff on customer-facing accounts, so verify fluency at the team level rather than the company level.

Is Colombia cheaper than Mexico?

Generally yes, particularly outside Bogotá. Mexico’s advantage is border proximity rather than rate.

What does the 56 percent informality figure mean for hiring?

It means the formal, recruitable labour pool is much smaller than the population suggests. Ramp plans should assume slower hiring than headline demographics imply.

Is Colombia safe for staff and visiting executives?

The main commercial cities are routinely visited by international business travellers. Risk varies sharply by region, so follow provider guidance on travel outside the main centres.

Can Colombia support both voice and software work?

Yes, and that combination is its clearest advantage over regional peers.
