Private Cloud Outsourcing

Definition

Private Cloud Outsourcing

Private cloud outsourcing is contracting a provider to run the cloud infrastructure that is dedicated to your organisation alone. You get a cloud operating model with single-tenant isolation, and you pay for that dedication rather than sharing it.

Isolation is the product — everything else about the experience looks like public cloud, and the difference sits in who else is on the hardware.

Buyers choose it for regulation, for predictable performance, or for workloads that were never designed to share — and sometimes because an auditor asked a question nobody could answer well.

The economics are different from public cloud — capacity is bought ahead rather than consumed on demand, so utilisation planning matters far more.

Key takeaways

  • Single-tenant isolation is what buyers are actually paying for.
  • Capacity is committed ahead, so utilisation planning matters.
  • Patching responsibility depends on where the service line sits.
  • Exit needs a tested data export, agreed before signing.

How it works

A provider builds or allocates dedicated infrastructure, presents it through cloud tooling, and operates it under an availability target. The buyer consumes it like public cloud, while the hardware and often the operating system are managed by the provider.

Capacity commitment is the commercial difference. You size for peak and pay for it, so a workload with a sharp seasonal profile is often better placed elsewhere.

The service models have a standard definition. NIST Special Publication 800-145, published in September 2011, sets out the deployment models including private cloud alongside public and hybrid.

Security expectations are published. CISA secure by design guidance sets out the practices buyers should expect from any technology supplier operating their systems.

Hybrid arrangements are now the norm rather than the exception. Regulated data stays private, and elastic front-end workloads run public, connected across a managed link.

Exit planning starts with an export test. Confirm that a full data extraction works, at production volume, before the contract is signed rather than when you need it.

Examples

Private cloud is chosen where isolation, predictability, or regulation rules out a shared platform entirely. Four cases show the range of reasons that buyers actually give.

A regional bank. Core banking workloads run on dedicated infrastructure operated by a provider, with regulator-facing evidence of physical and logical separation.

A hospital group. Clinical systems sit in a single-tenant environment, and administrative workloads run on public cloud under the same management tooling.

A defence supplier. Controlled technical data is held on dedicated infrastructure in-country, with access limited to cleared personnel only.

A manufacturer. Plant control systems run on a private platform because latency and predictability matter more than elastic scale ever could.

The common thread was not cost. Every one of those buyers accepted a higher unit price in exchange for isolation they could actually demonstrate to someone.

Related terms

Private cloud outsourcing sits between traditional hosting and public cloud services, so it borders both and the roles that operate them. The list below marks the boundaries.

FAQ

What makes a cloud private?

Single tenancy. The infrastructure is dedicated to one organisation rather than shared, whether it sits in a provider’s data centre or your own.

Is it more secure than public cloud?

Not automatically. It simplifies some compliance evidence, and major public providers often invest more in security than a single-tenant estate can.

Who patches the operating system?

It depends on the service line. Clarify in the contract, because this is the single most common gap in a hosted arrangement.

Does it cost more?

Usually per unit, because capacity is committed rather than consumed. Predictable workloads can still land cheaper than on-demand pricing.

Can it be combined with public cloud?

Yes, and most organisations do. Regulated data stays private and elastic workloads run public, joined by a managed connection.

What should exit planning include?

A tested full data export at production volume, plus documented configuration. Test it before signing, not when the relationship has soured.
