Infrastructure Outsourcing

Definition

Infrastructure Outsourcing

Infrastructure outsourcing is contracting out the operation of servers, networks, and hosting to an outside provider that runs it day to day. It covers capacity, availability, patching, and monitoring, and the buyer keeps architectural authority over the whole estate.

The category predates cloud computing by decades and did not disappear with it. Somebody still has to patch, monitor, and answer the phone when a service stops responding.

What changed is the unit of purchase. Buyers used to buy racks and now buy availability, which shifts the argument from equipment lists to service outcomes.

Cloud migration moved the conversation rather than ending it. A poorly run cloud estate is just as expensive as a poorly run data centre, and considerably easier to overspend on.

Key takeaways

  • Infrastructure outsourcing buys operation and availability, not equipment.
  • Architecture and account ownership stay with the buyer.
  • Cost control replaced capacity planning as the main discipline.
  • Exit is technical, so portability belongs in the original design.

How it works

The buyer defines the services that must stay available and the tolerances around them, then contracts a provider to operate the underlying platform. Availability targets, response times, and maintenance windows are all written into the agreement.

Responsibility boundaries need drawing precisely — the line between provider and buyer changes with each service model, and an unclear boundary produces outages nobody is contractually obliged to fix.

The models themselves are defined publicly. NIST SP 800-145 sets out the service and deployment models for cloud computing, giving both parties shared vocabulary before negotiation starts.

Maintenance windows are worth negotiating carefully rather than accepting as standard. A window that suits a provider global roster can land squarely on your busiest trading hours.

Cost control has replaced capacity planning as the harder discipline. An unoptimised workload no longer produces a queue; it produces an invoice that grows quietly every month.

Assurance frameworks help buyers compare providers — the FedRAMP marketplace lists cloud offerings that have been authorised against a defined security standard, which is a useful reference even outside government.

Examples

Infrastructure outsourcing spans data centre operation, cloud management, network services, and hybrid estates, and the responsibility boundary shifts in each. Four cases show the range.

A retailer. Data centre operations were contracted in 2023 while the retailer kept architecture and the commercial relationship with its hardware vendors.

A financial services firm. Cloud platform management was outsourced with a shared cost optimisation target, so the provider gained from reducing spend.

A manufacturer. Network operations across 60 sites moved to one provider, with a defined response window per site tier.

A media company. A hybrid estate was managed by a single provider, with clear written ownership of the boundary between hosted and cloud workloads.

Each contract named the boundary explicitly — the estates that ran badly were the ones where two competent teams each believed the other owned a component.

Related terms

Infrastructure outsourcing sits alongside the narrower platform services and the operational roles that keep any technology estate running from day to day. The list below marks the boundaries.

FAQ

Did cloud make infrastructure outsourcing obsolete?

No. It changed what is operated rather than whether operation is needed, and cloud estates need active cost and configuration management.

Who owns the cloud accounts?

The buyer should. A provider operating inside your account can be replaced; a provider that owns the account holds your estate hostage at renewal.

What is the most common contract flaw?

An unclear responsibility boundary. Components neither party believes it owns are exactly the ones that fail on a Sunday night.

How is availability usually priced?

In tiers. Higher availability needs redundancy and faster response, and the cost rises sharply for each additional nine of uptime.

How should cost optimisation be handled?

Make it a shared target with a stated share of savings. A provider paid on consumption has no reason to reduce your bill.

What makes exit difficult?

Technical entanglement. Portability has to be designed in at the start, because retrofitting it during a transition is slow and expensive.
