To be a social media specialist, you obviously need knowledge and experience in using different social media platforms.

Take note of the candidate’s level of experience using social media and navigating through the inner workings of each platform. Listen if the candidate has experience creating social media content, engaging with followers, and keeping track of the different analytics.

2. Can you share examples of successful social media campaigns you’ve led?

This question gives insight into the candidates ability to lead and execute social media campaigns. Ask them to share a specific example of a social media campaign that they ran, their objectives, and what kind of results it yielded.

3. How do you stay updated with the latest trends and changes in social media platforms?

Since the digital landscape is always changing, social media specialists must also keep up with all these changes. 

You want the candidates to show that they are up to date with certain trends and algorithms for the brand to stay fresh and relevant.

Take note if they mention how specifically they stay updated and what strategies they can implement to continue staying updated.

4. Can you describe a challenging situation you faced in managing a social media crisis and how you handled it?

Social media campaigns are also vulnerable to crises and negative feedback, and it is the social media specialist’s responsibility to mitigate these.

This question gives insight into the candidates’ ability to manage a social media crisis. Listen to how they highlight what the crisis was, how they responded, and what the outcome was.

5. How do you measure the success of a social media campaign?

It is the social media specialist’s job to ensure that campaigns will bring the desired results. 

Listen to how candidates explain the key performance indicators (KPIs) needed to measure the success of their campaign. Additionally, you can ask about the different analytics tools they use.

6. Can you provide insights into your content creation process and how you tailor content for different platforms?

A social media specialist should have the creativity needed to publish all forms of content, such as images, videos, and infographics.

Listen to how candidates explain their process to gauge their creative skills, from planning to execution. You can also ask them to provide examples of their previous works that best showcase their skills in content creation.

7. How would you successfully collaborate with another brand or influencer?

Part of social media specialists’ job is networking, meaning they reach out to other brands and influencers, hoping to collaborate on a certain project.

This question gauges the candidates’ ability to build connections and relationships, which ultimately helps both parties grow.

Ask candidates to give a specific example of how they would approach networking, from the initial outreach to the final results.
