BPO Growth Vietnam

Definition

BPO Growth Vietnam

Vietnam’s outsourcing sector is growing faster than any established Asian market, led by software engineering rather than by customer contact. Its advantage is technical labour at low cost, and its constraint is the depth of spoken English available for voice work.

The country’s rise has been rapid and policy-driven — sustained investment in technical education and digital infrastructure produced an engineering workforce far larger than the economy’s size would suggest.

Buyers use Vietnam mainly for what can be written rather than spoken. Software development, QA, data engineering and back-office processing all travel well.

Voice work is the exception — spoken English is improving but remains well behind Philippine standards, so consumer-facing telephone support is rarely placed here.

Key takeaways

  • Vietnam’s growth is engineering-led, not contact-centre-led.
  • Developer rates sit below Philippine and often below Indian equivalents.
  • Written technical English is strong; spoken English for consumer voice is not.
  • Rapid wage inflation means multi-year contracts should assume rising costs.

How it works

Vietnam’s sector works by supplying technical labour at rates below its regional peers, drawing on a young workforce and a state programme of digital investment. Buyers contract either a Vietnamese provider or a regional provider running a Vietnamese site.

The growth is documented and fast. The International Trade Administration records Vietnam’s digital economy at approximately 18% of GDP in 2024, a 20% increase on 2023, with government targeting 20.5% and $52 billion in revenue for 2025.

The wider economy is expanding just as quickly. The World Bank recorded GDP growth of 8 percent in 2025, moderating to a forecast 6.8 percent in 2026.

Wage inflation is the planning risk. Demand for Vietnamese engineers is rising faster than supply, so a rate agreed today will look cheap and be renegotiated sooner than expected.

Contracts price per developer month rather than per seat, which means the buyer rather than the provider absorbs the cost of churn.

That allocation deserves scrutiny before signature. In a market where engineers are being poached steadily, paying by headcount means paying twice for the same role — once to train it and again to replace it.

Examples

Vietnamese engagements concentrate in written and technical work, which is where the market genuinely competes rather than where it is marketed. What follows reflects delivery that genuinely happens, rather than delivery merely marketed.

A German payments company runs platform engineering from Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh outsourcing suits it because written technical English is strong and rates sit below Manila equivalents.

A Japanese manufacturer runs embedded software development from Hanoi. Hanoi outsourcing works partly because Japanese-language capability is more common here than elsewhere in the region.

A US SaaS company runs QA and test automation from Da Nang. Da Nang outsourcing costs less than the two main cities, and the client accepts a smaller pool in exchange.

A software vendor runs a dedicated team through a Vietnam software outsourcing partner, sized deliberately at forty engineers because scaling beyond that would mean competing hard on salary.

Vietnamese delivery is described both by service line and by city, and the entries below separate the two. The entries below give one meaning apiece, with the dividing line made explicit.

FAQ

Is Vietnam cheaper than India for software?

Often at junior and mid levels. India retains greater depth at senior and architect levels, so the comparison depends heavily on the seniority mix you need.

Can Vietnam handle English-language voice work?

Rarely for consumer-facing telephone support. Written English is strong, so email, chat and technical documentation work far better than live calls.

How fast are wages rising?

Fast enough to matter over a three-year term. Build an escalation assumption into the contract rather than treating year-one rates as durable.

Which city should I choose?

Ho Chi Minh City for depth, Hanoi for enterprise and Japanese-facing work, Da Nang for cost. The two main cities carry most experienced engineers.

Is Vietnam still an emerging market for outsourcing?

Arguably not. On provider depth and volume it has largely graduated, though it remains younger than India or the Philippines in supervisory experience.

What size team can Vietnam support?

Comfortably into the hundreds in the main cities. Beyond that you will be competing directly on salary with well-funded regional employers.
