IT-BPM Sector India

Definition

IT-BPM Sector India

The IT-BPM sector in India covers information technology services and the business process management that is delivered from Indian sites. It is the largest services export industry in the country, and it employs a workforce of more than five million.

The label matters because it is broader than outsourcing — it covers domestic technology work, client-owned capability centres and product engineering as well as third-party contracts.

Growth has shifted toward higher-value activity — engineering research, analytics and digital services now grow faster than transactional processing.

The sector is also increasingly domestic — a substantial share of revenue now comes from Indian customers rather than from exports alone, which changes how the industry describes itself.

Key takeaways

  • IT-BPM covers IT services, business process management, product engineering and capability centres.
  • The technology workforce numbers in the millions, a large share of it digitally skilled.
  • Growth is concentrated in higher-value engineering, analytics and digital work.
  • Domestic demand is now a meaningful share of sector revenue, not just exports.

How it works

The sector operates through four channels: third-party IT services firms, business process management providers, client-owned capability centres, and product companies. Buyers choose between them on control and cost, since all four draw from one labour pool.

The scale is documented. Invest India records the technology industry at $254 billion in FY24 including hardware, an addition of $9 billion over the previous year, with a technology workforce of 5.43 million of whom 2 million are digitally skilled.

Domestic activity is significant in its own right. The same source records the domestic technology sector at $54 billion in FY24, growing 5.4% annually, with engineering research growing 7.8%.

Export performance shows up in the national accounts. The World Bank notes that the export of software and business services was instrumental in India’s service export expansion, in an economy growing 6.5 percent in FY24-25.

Public policy has shaped the geography. Software Technology Parks of India operates 73 centres, 65 of them in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, spreading activity beyond the metros.

Examples

IT-BPM covers a range of work far wider than the outsourcing label suggests. What follows are real working arrangements rather than the wider set on the brochure.

A bank runs risk analytics from a provider site in Bangalore. That is India IT outsourcing at the analytical end rather than the transactional one.

An insurer owns an actuarial centre in Hyderabad. The site is a global capability center (GCC) and sits inside the sector without being outsourcing at all.

A medical-devices firm runs clinical documentation and regulatory filing in India. That is knowledge process outsourcing (KPO), which turns on domain credentials rather than process training.

A healthcare group runs medical coding and revenue-cycle operations from several cities. This remains classic India BPO, and it is still a large part of the sector.

FAQ

What does IT-BPM actually stand for?

Information technology and business process management. It is the umbrella term the Indian industry uses for IT services plus process work, rather than a synonym for outsourcing.

Is IT-BPM the same as BPO?

No. BPO is one part of it. The umbrella also covers IT services, engineering research and client-owned capability centres that are not outsourced at all.

How large is the workforce?

Invest India records a technology workforce of 5.43 million, of whom 2 million are described as digitally skilled.

Which segment is growing fastest?

Engineering research and development, alongside capability centres. Transactional processing grows more slowly than either.

Is the sector only export-driven?

Not any more. The domestic technology sector was recorded at $54 billion in FY24, growing 5.4% annually, so Indian customers are a meaningful market.

Where is the work located?

Concentrated in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and the Delhi region, with deliberate policy support for smaller cities.
