Solutions Architect

Definition

Solutions Architect

A solutions architect designs and champions technical solutions matched to each new customer problem, sitting between sales, engineering, and the customer team. The role owns the technical shape of the deal from discovery through system design and the final handoff.

Solutions architects work inside software vendors, cloud providers, and systems integrators. They live in customer meetings, on design reviews, and inside architecture diagrams that get pinned to Confluence pages.

The role scaled with cloud complexity. As AWS, Azure, and GCP each grew to 200-plus services, no salesperson could carry the technical scope alone.

Solutions architects filled that gap and now anchor most enterprise-tier sales motions.

Key takeaways

  • Solutions architects own the technical shape of the deal, not just the answer to “how does this work?”.
  • Typical remit: discovery, architecture design, proof-of-concept, and post-sale handoff to delivery.
  • Standard KPIs: proof-of-concept win rate, revenue influenced, and customer technical satisfaction.
  • Offshore solutions architects sit in Bengaluru, Manila, and Warsaw for cloud and SaaS vendors globally.

How it works

A solutions architect works from a customer’s stated problem back to a proposed architecture. They run discovery sessions, whiteboard designs, and build proof-of-concept demos.

They then review security constraints and defend the architecture through procurement scrutiny until the deal closes.

The daily job splits into four buckets: discovery, design, prove, hand off. Discovery is customer meetings and workshops; design produces the reference architecture.

Prove is the working POC or demo, and hand off is the transition to delivery.

ProvePOC, demo, security reviewPOC win rate
Hand offDelivery brief, statement of workPost-sale continuity

Reference architectures are the flagship deliverable. Diagrams show the customer how components fit — services, data flows, security zones, integration points.

Good architects reuse patterns across deals rather than starting from a blank canvas each time.

Proof-of-concept sprints are common. A 2-4 week POC often decides an enterprise deal. Solutions architects run these end-to-end, sometimes writing code alongside customer engineers to prove the pattern works.

Solutions architects report into a director of solutions engineering, a technical presales manager, or a VP of solutions architecture. Career paths lead to principal architect, chief architect, or VP of engineering.

Offshore hiring for the role became common after 2022 as cloud vendors and consultancies looked to protect margins. Bengaluru and Manila host large solutions architect pools serving US and European clients on rotating time-zone shifts.

Examples

Solutions architect roles anchor every enterprise software and cloud company. In 2024, AWS, Salesforce, and Snowflake all posted senior solutions architect positions across regional teams globally.

Amazon Web Services publishes solutions architect roles at multiple levels — SA I → III → Principal SA — tied to industry verticals like public sector, financial services, and manufacturing. Regional teams cover named accounts.

Salesforce runs a large solutions architect function inside its industry clouds (Financial Services, Health, Retail). Architects join a named account team for the sales cycle then hand off to a customer success architect for post-sale delivery.

Snowflake hired solutions architects heavily through 2023-24 across EMEA and APAC. Bengaluru and Singapore host offshore pods supporting enterprise deals across banking, retail, and media in local time zones.

Cognizant and Infosys deploy solutions architects into US and UK client accounts as part of larger transformation programs. The architect anchors the technical vision while delivery managers coordinate execution across offshore developer squads.

FAQ

What is the difference between a solutions architect and a solutions engineer?

An architect designs the architecture and defends the shape of the deal. An engineer builds the demos, POCs, and integrations. The two roles pair on complex enterprise deals; smaller deals often collapse them into one hire.

What certifications do solutions architects need?

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect, or Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Vendor certifications are the ticket to entry for cloud-focused SA roles.

Can solutions architects be hired offshore?

Yes. Bengaluru and Manila host large offshore solutions architect pools. Client-facing English fluency, cloud certifications, and time-zone overlap for customer meetings determine which providers can serve enterprise deals.

How much does a solutions architect earn?

In the US, mid-level architects earn $155,000 to $220,000 base as of 2024, with total compensation often exceeding $260,000 including equity and bonus. Offshore equivalents earn $45,000 to $85,000 fully loaded.

What skills matter most?

Whiteboarding, listening, cloud architecture patterns, and stakeholder management.
